Congrats bscout. Ditto for me, in with $20K and tuition.
BTW, do you know what TA commitment that entails for the first year. I can't find good information on their website, but it does say "assistantship" in the email. Good luck everywhere else. |

Wow, a $20k fellowship is generous, especially considering Iowa's low cost of living. I almost applied to Iowa, but it doesn't seem to be especially strong in public finance (which is my primary interest right now).

I think agelbaby_uci is reffering to the housing options. I looked into this, and the apartments around the Econ building (downtown Iowa) are not great (depending ion what you are used to). They typically do not have central air, and off street parking is not free or even convenient. This is what I gatherd from looking on Iowa housing web page. Feel frree to chime in with better info since I do not have first or even second hand knowledge.
Agelbaby is located in Orange County CA, so obviously the apartments are not as nice. However, it looks like the rents are reasonable considering the downtown location.

On the plus side (as someone who's family is from Iowa), if you're going to be working somewhere else over the summers, you really don't need A/C, and Iowa City is actually a very nice college town, though extremely small by Big 10 standards.
On the minus side, if you're there in July, be prepared for 85-90 degree daily highs, with no wind and a weekly thunderstorm you'll be able to smell in the air the morning it happens. |
