i heard from my prof who graduated in UWisc that it admits more than normal and then many die out at qualifying exam. is it true? he said it's like UChicago in some sense. Also, only a few top got fellowship and it waits till you get over the exam and then you get funding... (or at least after the first year)

But, is there an evidence that people fail the quals because the department can't support so many graduate students or maybe it's happening because they admit too many weaker applicants?

i dont think they fail because the dept cannot support the students. he said in his class, 40% failed or even more (i dont remember the exact number) but the main thing was that they don't have a great development program so i didnt apply :P

OK, if we haven't heard from Wisconsin yet, how concerned should we be? (I don't mean to rain on the parade of those who have been admitted -- congratulations!!)

This year we are 25. I guess it is not too much. So the info is not true.

chicago has stopped taking 40 students and kicking them out. the best way to prove that, chicago had almost 30-40 students on the market this yr...
i think that image of chicago still lives in the minds of profs who went to school 5 yrs ago or more. as economists, we of all people should know the importance of updating beliefs!

What about Cornell? I heard they also have a reputation for giving tough qualifying examinations.
