Other Economists who have done similar work as Steven Levitt?

Theory is a strength of Becker's work, though. The same cannot be said for Levitt. If the OP is interested in the topics in Freakonomics, then Becker is a classic source. If he's more drawn to the clever econometrics and isn't interested in the underlying theory, then Becker won't hold the same attraction.

You might try some of Card or Krueger's papers.

Given the subjects he writes about, I would say it's "applied microeconomics" applied to subjects such as criminology, education, and sociology. I don't know which cathegory this falls into in econphd.net rankings due to the interdisciplinary nature of his work. Labor and public economics would probably be the closest.

Check out the work by Rafael Di Tella from Harvard Business School related to the role of beliefs and happiness in economic organization. In particular, you may find interesting the following papers:

"The Formation of Beliefs: Evidence from the Allocation of Land Titles to Squatters”, 2006, QJE.

“Do Police Reduce Crime? Estimates Using the Allocation of Police Forces after a Terrorist Attack”, 2004, AER

“The Macroeconomics of Happiness”, 2003, Rev. Econ. Statist.
