Help with decision: QEM Erasmus VS Tinbergen

Hi guys, I received two offers of admission, one from the European master in quant econ (QEM, I saw a thread here a couple of days ago on this program), and another from the Tinbergen in the Netherlands. Can anyone give me some advice on this?

I know the Tinbergen Institute is a good place, but how prestigious indeed it is? Plus, my offer @ TI is a PhD track, while the QEM master can probably lead to a better place after grad. Or can it?

The QEM is composed of one sem in Paris I, one sem in Bielefeld and one year in U Autonoma Barcelona.

Your advices are much appreciated!!!

You mean you applied TI for PhD rather than Mphil?

The Tinbergen Institute's program will be good for you if you want to go straight to a PhD already. Although TI itself seems to be unknown in rankings, the consortium of universities that make it up are top ranked. To quote from their website:

"The Tinbergen Institute as such has not been listed in the rankings appearing in JEEA; only its three participating departments. The UvA department is ranked as 10th, the EUR as 15th and the VU as 30th in Europe (Kalaitzidakis et all., June 2003). Adding up the publications of the three departments brings the Tinbergen Institute in the ranking of European institutions on the first place in Europe and on the 15th place worldwide. Research Fellows of the Tinbergen Institute publish in top journals, e.g. Econometrica, the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Economic Studies."

It is just a matter of finding a very good advisor who is at the same time actively publishes in the top journals.

QEM program, on the other hand, will definitely position you better for top schools if you do well in the math econ track. Some people coming from Bielefeld and UAB (not through QEM but as undergrad and masteral grads) for example got into the top 20 programs in the U.S. Btw, I'm waitlisted in the QEM program.

I can't help you with that, makebin. But going through the c.v.s of jobmarket candidates of the top 20 these past two years I haven't seen people with TI masteral background. The reason might be that they proceed directly to its doctoral program.

Thank you so much, guys! A third, somewhat unexpected offer from Insead helped me to resolve this difficulty.

The TI program is officially a Mphil, but the school expect 'only those who want to continue into TI PhD' to enroll. I think it may not be very fair to them to quit after the acceptance of the Mphil. Though I heard someone has done that before.

I will decline the QEM offer, hope this can bring you to the mainlist, treasuries!!

Hello Everyone,

I am really facing a difficult time. I have two options.

Option1: Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for the QEM program (Europe)

Option2: M.S in Applied Economics from Illinois State University (U.S.A)

both the options are fully funded. However, for the Option 2, I have received RA ship and Tuition Waver. But in Europe it is a full scholarship for everything(room and board and studies, everything) and Full medical insurance as well.

Although the studies in Europe are in English but I do not know French and neither German and I will be studying first semester in Paris and the remaining 1.5 years in Germany. I will be made to learn both the languages at a basic level. Full course work in Euope is in English....

I will not be doing a PHd after my masters and I am looking forward to get a good job in the corporate sector (in Finance, banks, insurance etc...) anywhere in the world after doing masters either from Europe or U.S. What you think is a better place to go for that matter.

I am really confused to death.....Please help!!!
