The entry is not mine, but I just got an email saying I got into the Masters-stream program.
I am very excited as UBC is a top program in Canada. My undergrad profile is not that bad but its not that good either. Will the UBC masters program help my profile a good amount? Please provide some input and good luck everybody. |

well UBC is the best MA program in canada I believe if you are applying this september to PhD maybe you might not even get to submit fall term grades which means your UGrad will still mean a lot but i'm sure someone else can confirm that |

Werther,
I realized this problem before applying to UBC. I may finish the masters program - which is one year - and apply when all my grades are in. This strategy will delay a PhD program for 2 years. I'm wondering if this delay would be worth it. EDIT: No financial aid info yet. My email was from the college and not the department. Aid info will come from the department. |

i just got an email saying i am in, but without aid. However,i am awarded some kind of scholarship of $3338 to offset tuition. They also said more financial aid may be available as late as August. Happy to get in, but not likely to enroll. Best luck for everyone.

Russ - for the PhD, they sent out a wave of admissions around the beginning of March, and only a few people have turned down offers - most of the rest are expected to respond around now. I think they're trying to have a smaller class size this year (~12), and it seems like almost everyone gets some sort of funding, albeit through TAships for many (TA ships are max 12 hours/week, how much work you actually do varies and is less than that for some people). I don't know of anyone admitted yet to the PhD without funding, but it's possible. As far as I can tell, as soon as an outstanding offer is turned down they make an offer to someone else. I would guess they do something similar with MA admissions.

Just when I was dead set on signing my offer letter from Carleton today and handing it in tomorrow, I got an email from Maureen of UBC today. She said I will surely get the decision by end of next week.
Now I have to talk to Carleton and beg for a 3rd extension. All for what? 9/10 chance I will be rejected by UBC anyway. But for that remaining 1/10.... |

Can_econ,
Thanks for your reply.I have applied to UBC for MA and as I have seen the statistics on their website, the acceptance rate at UBC for the MA program is around 50%, like 130 from 250. Therefore I expect they do the same this year. Mishal, Had you emailed her for asking her your application status? Did she say that all of the decisions will be sent out late next week? |
