Are you applying for PhD or MA? At UBC some people are allowed to skip MA if they have high grades in math. Direct PhD's are funded a bit more.
Canada is a bit different from USA - it's not part of the "April 15" agreement. Deadlines for acceptances might vary (it might suck if one university requires answer before you hear from all schools, though maybe it can be negotiable). Also, deadlines for submitting the application are much later than USA (February or March). When did you submit your application? UBC works kind of like NYU. They contact (frequently by phone) top students and move down the list. Prof. David Green's in charge. In case you also applied to Toronto, Prof. Adonis Yatchew is in charge of admissions. You can't skip MA but you can choose to take only PhD core and no MA core in a doctoral MA. Funding is mostly for doctoral stream and PhD's. In either case, PhD (or doctoral stream) applicants should be the first ones to hear. Regular MA's sometimes wait longer. I know many MA applicants who heard from very few universities (e.g. UVictoria and Simon Frasier).

Ubc
thank you for your responses.
i am applying for PhD, already have an MA from a US University. my stats are not stella (3.55/3.89(last term) MA GPA) and a very poor undergrad school(3.89GPA), but have extensive research/teaching experience at an Ivy League school and strong recommendations from renowned economists. do you have a feel for how much stock UBC puts into stats versus experience? oh, and math, i have very modest list of advanced courses w/ A record, no real analysis or linear algebra though… i have been in contact w/ Maureen Chin, do you think it is a good idea to contact Prof. Green directly? much appreciated! |

galka - UBC has made some offers, but I -highly- doubt they've made most of their offers. The April 15 deadline doesn't apply to Canadian schools (afaik). If you have solid recs from research experience with good economists, then you should be able to overcome deficiencies. If you have Calc 1-3 and some diff eqs or matrix algebra math shouldn't be the major constraint. A 3.55 GPA might hurt, depending on how the school you're from grades, but it's hard to say since you don't seem to have a standard, straight-from-BA-or-MA background.
I wouldn't bother e-mailing Green yet - I've heard of UBC sending out decisions even in late-March - April. |

My understanding is UBC's PhD should be enough for any school in Canada but for working in the U.S. exclusively, one would be better off going to a slightly lower ranked American school (going to which would be less useful for working in Canada). U.S. schools pay more, especially if they are not unionized.
