    Yale flyout

I just emailed Pam O' Donnel about Yale visit and she told me that visiting students will be reimbursed their travel expenses after the grad weekend. She also asked me to confirm my presence as soos as possible, since there are a few rooms left in the hotel. For those of you who are flying to New Haven: did you understand whether they pay for the accomodation or are they going to reimburse that afterwards as well? I don't want to bother Pam with another email but I am concerned about it, since I would already spend (much) more than what they will reimburse only with the plane ticket and, being on the waitlist, I don't know if it is worth to spend thousands dollars for this visit...

if you get in you'll go, but you might not get in if you dont visit. but it is very expensive to visit. funny.
I am going to NYU Stern to do an Economics PhD which will be wicked nice.

Do you really think that I would have more chances of being admitted if I went to the graduate weekend?
That sounds pretty weird to me...in particular since Yale has a precise ranking for people in the waitlist...I don't think that the "signal" given by presence would make me going up in that ranking. I'd like to attend the gradweekend at Yale because the one at Caltech gave me a lot of infos on the programme and a real feeling of the atmosphere. Not because of lobbying nor signaling my interest in getting in (it would rather be a signal of my willingness/ability to pay).

My understanding was that they would pay the hotel and then separately reimburse the ticket. But that's just how I read the invitation email and we might also have gotten different letters.

That's what I understood as well. I think the letters are all the same since they just forwarded me the same letter sent to admitted students. Ironically, it begins with "Congratulation on your admission to the Department of Economics at Yale University"....

Did you make it clear in your question that you were on the waitlist? I don't think wait listed students have been contacted about the flyout. You should make sure you'll get reimbursed before you do it...

I asked in a previous mail wether they would invite me and they hence told me that I was more than welcome and forwarded me the standard email sent to admitted students. So I am sure I will be reimbursed (within the threshold).

    Any thought about the accomodation?

I think the previous poster is correct. They pay the accommodation and then reimburse you for flight, taxis, etc. That's what Pam told me. If you want to go, then go for it, but I would seriously doubt (as you doubted earlier) that it will improve your chances of getting in.

    yeah,
You don't need to worry about the rooms. They're paid for by the department with money separate from the flyout stipend.
