Chicago placements (and pass rates)
Hi Group: Since some of you asked about our placements, I thought that I would try to deliver something useful. We are checking the final numbers once more, but something similar to this entry will soon be placed on our site of FAQ (where it also says that over 80% of matriculants in the past 10 years pass qualifiers within 2 years; note that conditional on actually taking the exams, over 85% of students pass all 3 exams (not bad for a department that is notorious for flunking everyone, huh?):
What kinds of jobs do your students get after graduation? In recent years, about 51% of our graduates have taken jobs in academic institutions, including universities and colleges throughout the world; about 27% have taken jobs in private-sector firms, including banks, investment houses, and consulting firms; about 22% have taken jobs in government financial and regulatory institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the Federal Reserve system, and central banks from other countries; and about 1% went on to further study, such as law school. Among those who took academic jobs, about 28% took their first jobs at universities with the top 20 economics departments in the United States (according to a *recent ranking*). *link to http://ideas.repec.org/p/lec/leecon/01-8.html for 'Pantelis Kalaitzidakis, Theofanis Mamuneas, Thanasis Stengos (2001). Hi John,
It's striking that those who do go into academia place very well, yet there is a large group that ends up in industry. Is there a prevalent attitude that, if it's not a top 50, then you're better off in consulting? Or do 20% of graduates get no offers from research universities? Christian |

Table 1 in Athey, et al (http://www.aeaweb.org/annual_mtg_pap..._0800_0603.pdf) has the average PhD completion rate (not just quals) for students admitted to the top schools (including Chicago) and the percent of ALL PhD completors at those schools getting top 20 jobs.

Poor Stanford - their input has been assimilated into the Harvard machine.
