Question HELP: How does Ag Econ differ from Econ?

    Hi, all.
As a student knowing little about Ag Econ, I find that in most universities, there are two depts: Ag Econ and Econ. Does this fact mean that Ag Econ is very different from Econ? In addition, as far as placement in industry (not academia) is concerned, is Ag Econ better than Econ?
Hopefully, you can share your valuable opinions on the issue.
    Thanks a lot.

Ag econ departments focus on agricultural economics and envt/resource economics, as well as development, trade (often with a slightly more applied focus). Placement in industry? depends on what you want. Ag econ non-academic placements tend to be oriented towards food, agriculture, environment, resources, etc both within governments and the private sector. So it really will depend on what you want.

Ag Economists in East and Southeast Asia work on development related issues like economic growth, poverty alleviation, rural development, etc. in developing countries. Non-academic employment would be in ADB, WB and other development agencies.

Does going into an AgEcon dept automatically rule out the option of going into theory?

I think not. There's profs in Ag Econ (some with Ag Econ Phds even) that do micro theory research.
