I'll comment on what I do know, with help from others we can create a list
...Duke's strength seems to be applied micro, but pretty weak in macro. Virginia's not great in macro but probably above Duke; on the other hand they're good in applied micro but probably not as much so as Duke. Duke is about 2.5 hours from salt water, and UVA is also about that far. Duke has had mediocre placements until recently, and they seem to have gotten much better the last few years. Virginia's are probably a little weaker but still fairly good. I have seen Cornell's list and it is probably at the bottom. I think UMD is pretty good, Brown not so much so (you rarely seen Brown PhD's at top schools). Weather probably goes Duke, UVA, UMD, Texas, Brown, BU, Cornell (I don't know about CA schools). Coed undergrads: Texas, UVA, Duke, UMD, I imagine NE schools are weak and CA are strong (well at least UCLA) .Duke has a pretty large group of young, tenured faculty. UVA seems to have some older and younger people in all areas.

for me UCLA ~ Caltech ~ UMD > Texas ~ Cornell > BU > Duke ~ Brown >(?) UVA
note that ucla is/was losing some top faculty.

To heck with the co-ed undergrads. I want to attend a school with hot librarians!
On a more serious note, any school that runs on a real operating system will get a bump in my personal ranking. Life is too short to be forced to deal with non-UNIX systems. |
