M.A. Economics/ NYU
Hey guys,
I just accepted to go into the M.A. Economics. I have heard wonderful things about the program, but some people wont agree. I heard they are very mathematical. Any insight? Is it worth it? Thanks |

curious
hey i am currently a junior in college and thinking about applying to M.A. Economics program at NYU, as I too have heard wonderful things about it. I was just curious what math courses you took in college and what you thought made your application strong enough to be accepted. Thank you.

I was accepted into the NYU MA Econ program last year, but chose to go to UPF's MA instead. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. The MA at NYU, while the most technical of all US MAs, is still less technical than the best European/Canadian programs, where you can take PhD level courses. 2. If you want to go and work in the private sector after the degree, NYU would be a wonderful choice. But if you would like to continue on with a PhD, the placement of NYU MAs in the best econ PhD programs is rather weak (I think the FAQ section of the website has more detailed info). 3. The MA courses are NOT taught by the best professors at NYU. My advice would be: baylorbr: If you would like to do a PhD in a top Econ department, try to take as many maths courses in the Maths department at NYU as they would let you. jpd135: Look into other MA programs outside of the US (UBC, Toronto, Western Ontario, LSE, Oxbridge, UPF). |

I had a 500V 720Q 5.5 writing. My undergrad GPA was 3.55 and I had a B+ in int. macro and an A in int. Micro. I was an economics and intl. business major so I took more eco classes than just the eco majors, including econometrics and game theory. I had also done this research project in undergrad which i included in my application. The degree is great if you, like me, just want to work in the private sector afterwards. From what I read, it is supposedly a really good step up, but like the others advised, take math classes as your electives. Either way, I read the marketability of the degree is good. Thank you and good luck!

I've only got one semester left for my MA at NYU. There are quite a few kids here that want to pursue Phds, but really if you're from the US it is a waste of money to try to pony up for a Phd afterward since few places will accept the credits as transfer since the courses aren't really Phd courses. Another point that Richardoinho makes is that the courses aren't taught by the same Phd teachers. This is accurate for the core classes which are typically taught by Associate Professors who teach here as a second job, but you can take Phd classes or classes at Courant or Stern which are huge pluses to the program.
The classes here are difficult for people with little math or stats background or didn't have very rigorous undergraduate Economics training. If you're good at math, you shouldn't have much of a problem. I haven't really learned that much since I've been here with the exception of Harper's class on law. I think the best part about NYU is that almost all the classes are at night and you can work during the day. Given the insane cost of living in New York, I suppose the added experience can outweigh that. If I had to do it over again, I probably would have gone to the MA program at Michigan (just to save on living expenses) or just began studying for the CFA while I was an undergrad. If you have any questions about it, feel free to email me. |

Hi,
I have got an admit in NYU for the MA Economics course. I have been getting not so good reviews about the course. Your answer to the below questions will help me decide if i have to take up the admit or not. 1. How would you rate the MA Economics course at NYU vis a vis other similar courses 2. What are the kind of placement opportunities available after the course. 3. How easy it is to get a placement 4. How is the faculty. I am not keen on pursuing Phd and would like to take up a position as an economic analyst in a reputed company. Thanks for your time |
