Maybe I am wrong, and if so, someone please correct me because I don't want to give the op the wrong idea, but I thought basically the top schools are the ones that are good at theory. I am under the impression that basically the top 5 or top 10 schools are the ones who are training theorists, and the other schools are training people more to do empirical work.

YoungEconomist -- I agree with you generally. It seems hard to get attention in theory unless you come from one of a few schools. But there are certainly schools that buck the trend. If someone is looking for a niche program that would be a good jumping off point in theory even if one doesn't get into a top 10, then there are certainly places.
But it it seems much more frequent to see that type of niche program in a field other than theory, unless someone can think of other exceptions we missed. |
