From my ongoing experiences as a first year student...if you need to be convinced to do an econ phd...don't do it.
If you need a reason like how econ has helped development to persuade you...then don't do it. You should be going to grad school because you believe that economics can make a difference. If econ has solved all of the problems, why would you now want to become an economist. The whole point of going to grad school (in the big picture) is because you feel that all the questions haven't been answered.
