Forum for mathematics questions

Hi everyone.

While I was taking real analysis, I noticed there were limited resources online to allow one to ask questions and receive a prompt reply. I also noticed the same for other subjects in math as well. If I'm just not looking well enough, I'd love to see some other resources.

Anyways, I decided to create a website dedicated to primarily to providing a forum where people can ask questions about mathematics and receive a prompt reply. I'm also working on solutions manuals for real analysis and algebra textbooks too, which will be posted by chapter upon completion. The website is Math-Forums.net - Powered by vBulletin I'm posting here because I know there are a lot of math users

I currently have three people aside from myself who will check the website regularly. Two are seniors in mathematics, and the third is a second year PhD student. I'm looking for people to post questions and also to moderate the forums, so please contact me if you're interested. My e-mail is johnsontr AT gmail dot com.

I'd love to receive feedback too. Please spread the word, as this website will succeed only with active users.

Thanks for reading!

Great idea. Will definitely drop by, although I will be more of a beneficiary and less of a beneficient.

Is the forum Latex enabled? I don't think you'll ever get a serious forum started without this feature.

sartre just joined TestMagic.
physicsforums.com

I'm not too sure how much real analysis help one could get from there since most of the posters seem to be pretty young. There a couple older posters though--I think one has a PhD in math.

Great idea on the website. I especially think the solution manuals will be helpful.

How long would you say it takes to learn Latex? By the way, I'm not very knowledgable about computers and don't know programming, so take that into account when answering the question.

Is Latex free by the way? If not, how expensive is it?

It's not too difficult to write _readable_ LaTeX, but you could easily spend a lot of time learning how to write _good_ LaTeX.

Even if that forum doesn't support LaTeX directly, you could use a tool like Texify (Texify - Online LaTeX equation writer) to turn a LaTeX expression into a gif that can be inserted into a post. They even include an html code snippet just for forums.

LouisBD 's dreams are becoming reality.
Latex is free.
Learning is not that difficult, it depends on the level of mastery you aspire.
For example I can use tex enough, in the sense that I can do all ordinary things with it. However, one of the beauties of Tex is that there are very few limits on the things you can do with it. So many people I now are much more proficient in using latex.
Programming experience is not necessary but helpfull.
There are tons of great recources for Latex.

A classic text is the famous "not so short introduction to latex": http://tobi.oetiker.ch/lshort/lshort.pdf

The ultimate website for tex is: the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network

In my experience it helps a lot if a friend or teacher helps you the first couple of times you are using Latex (if you haven't a lot compu experience like myself).

Many universities have Scientifice workplace on their computers which is a more user friendly tool. If you have the time however, learn latex you will not regret it.

Good luck
