Don't worry. If you don't pass the comps, you can always go for a career of flipping burgers.

A joke from my undergrad advisor:

What happens to economists who don't finish their dissertations?

They become accountants.

It really depends on the school. I know for Georgetown it really depends on the year. Student quality is a lot more heterogeneous at lower-ranked schools, so it's not unusual to see a school cut half the class one year but then only a quarter the next. Whatever the case, though, if lower-ranked schools want to keep standards high, they're going to have to cut more people than higher ranked schools.

Karina keeps saying that Berkeley has no prelims, and clearly she is less stressed out... this makes me ask, what other program does not have any prelims... is Berkeley the only one?

Ha ha, I smell fear Don't worry about prelims, it brings the divine justice. Prelims clear the market, they sort of close the model Otherwise you cannot solve this problem.

Take undergrad stress, add up four years worth, multiply by ten, and then cube it. The resulting output equals about one tenth the stress of the job market.

UIUC doesn't have prelims, according to their FAQ: Department of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
