How good is the Yale economics PhD program?
Hi, I am curious as to how Yale compares to the other top schools (Chicago, MIT, Harvard, NYU, Princeton, Berkeley etc).
Is it famed for its mathematical rigor? Its focus on applied work? Is it easier or harder than other programs to complete (i.e. high attrition rates)? If anyone has some answers I would be very grateful! I would even like to know if New Haven is a nice place! |

Of course I'm biased, but it also means I'm well-informed...
Yale is considered THE place (or at least in the top 2-3) for econometrics, IO, and development. Labor is good. Trade is new but growing. Public finance is nonexistent. Macro is not bad, but not top-notch either. We only cut 1-2 people after the first year, which is a big plus. Typical entering class size is 22. Generally the feel is more relaxed and cooperative than cutthroat. New Haven isn't bad, actually. If you live downtown, then you have to deal with safety issues, but if you live on campus or in the East Rock neighborhood northeast of campus, it's much more residential and safer. New Haven is also very inexpensive compared with Palo Alto or Cambridge, say. I pay $725 in rent for a decent apartment. I think the consensus is that overall, Yale is between 4th and 7th. Most people would probably put it 6 or 7. Our placement record is also quite good, probably as good or better than Stanford or Chicago recently. Check the econ website for that information.

We've discussed that question in another thread recently, but I would sum it up by saying that New Haven has a nice mix of city life (entertainment, restaurants, bookstores, etc.) and semi-rural New England charm. If you want to go to a beach or picnic at a park, you don't have to fight traffic all day to get there. But if being in a truly big city is important to you, you'd probably rather go to NYU or Columbia.
While I don't know the department well, I'd note that in addition to a top metrics program, they have Altonji teaching labor. That's a plus in my book.

My apartment for 725 has a bathroom, kitchen, nice living room, and pretty small bedroom. I have a classmate who pays ~850 for a very large apartment near downtown. A lot of it depends on if you're willing to come and spend time looking at a lot of options (I wasn't).

I'd rather buy expensive shoes every month! (I have my eyes are set on this Hugo Boss pair I saw earlier). Haha
