Phd from not very high ranked universities
By now i was accepted to the phd in economics in Temple university...but i am not sure to go there or not (if i will not get acceptance somewhere else
). a have 2 big questions ; - is it possible to finish 2 years there and then re-apply somewhere? - what kind of job and where (in academia ?) is it possible to find after phd in Temple? |

We have tons of other threads about PhD transfers. In essence, the only reason you should be transferring out is if a) your interests do not match those of the department, or b) you are such a good student that you are somehow "too good" for the school. When you undertake a PhD, the school invests a lot in you, and many would not be happy to dump tens of thousands of dollars into you only to see you pack up and go elsewhere without a very good reason.
There are tons of jobs in academia for econ PhDs. You will not be placed well after graduating (most outside the top 20 or so schools aren't), but with good research, you can climb all the way to the top. If you just want to be a teacher, there are tons of teaching colleges all over the world that need econ PhDs. |

I know that I'm not supposed to give such a straightforward advice and that I should just provide you with more info (if I have) so that you can make an informed decision... However, in your case the answer is very simple: Don't go to Temple University. It doesn't even appear in the econphd rankings. I looked at your profile and it seems alright. I don't know if you can get into a top 20, but I consider it impossible for you to get rejected by all schools with a decent ranking (let's say top60?). So, if you don't get anything good, apply again and don't underestimate yourself. Even the job placements of some top schools look bad, I don't want to think about the others...

Since she's coming from another country to take her phd in the U.S., I assume that she's at least somewhat ambitious and that the location doesn't make much difference (what's the difference between 10,000 and 10,500 miles away from home?)... Generally speaking though, you are right. there are other parameters that play a significant role

Don't go to Temple... Wait until you get into Stony Brook, and if you don't hear from top 20, go to SUNY instead. At least Stony Brook has some good people on the faculty (one even has a Nobel Prize); Temple is completely unknown.

Yes, i applied from another country... and i need to be somewhere in the US next year
by now i was rejected from like 5 universities and was accepted only to Temple. But i am waiting for 9 more answers so anything could change... I know what is a problem in my application- i do not have a lot econ. courses (only 5-6, my program was strange ) so i thought that if i'll study in Temple economics and then reapply it could help.I really have big ambitious (may be it is bad ) so i did not mind spend some more years in such school (if it is necessary) to be admitted to a very good program...So the question is what is better to do ![]() |

have you applied to any MA programs? Jumping straight into a PhD sequence to show you can hack it would probably be only as good as just doing MA econ as the extra preparatory work in econ that you feel you might be lacking for admissions, and would also solve the problem of getting into better places than Temple the second time around...just a thought
