thanks molejo! yes, i am thinking the same way...they give me funding + mediterian climate but idd i am scared about those entry exams to phd track...that is basically my biggest concern. i heard TI doesnt have them. and, i kind of dont like big class-sizes, which is nice at TI. but the weather in netherlands doesnt fit my character

Did you also receive funding for the first year? I didn't know they did that. Since the first year at UPF is identical to the msc, I would guess the quality/intensity of the first year at Tinbergen is higher... The level of Tinbergen is very different from the msc at the university of Amsterdam.

Once you're accepted by Tinbergen, you're certain that you can continue in the PHD (paid, 2000-2500 Euro a month). Three universities participate in the institute, so many possible phd advisors.

yes, i got full funding. at UPF you can decide either to choose core economics courses (that are also on that entry exam) and they are really rigorous, or choose more field courses and they are supposed to be a bit easier. So basically, if you KNOW you want to do phd, you are basically doing MPhil.(they call it Master of research at UPF). if i am wrong, someone please correct me!

and yes, that is a BIG advantage at TI: certain PhD track and many possible advisors. and of course, great salary.

Yes, I think I will go there as well. When is your deadline for a final decision?

I am still waiting for some critical answers, but there is a substantial probability that I will go to TI (funded). I have also been accepted at UPF (MSc) (unfunded offer). Even if I had funding from UPF I think I would hardly choose it over TI.
