There is a pub called "Dog and Duck" where students and professors usually hang out. Students claimed that they are not intentionally competing with each other, and there were more collaboration than competition. (I think they brought up Chicago to demonstrate that they are not like that.) However, the grad advisor mentioned several times of the best students when he was asked about funding and research assistantships. Professors are approachable, but some might be too busy so you just need to make an appointment in advance.

Thanks, Mr. Keen, for bringing this thread to my attention: (this is a copy of what I've already posted on another thread)
I think IO is one UT Austin's strength; I just attended the visit day and was very impressed with the strong research being done in IO. Many of the faculty consider another field their main research focus but do research that also relates to IO. (eg: Cooper does macro, but has a clear interest in the intersection with IO). Also seems like a good department for international trade. The two international econ professors that met were junior faculty, but they both seemed like excellent professors and researchers; I really enjoyed talking to both of them. Interesting fact: UT Austin just placed on of their 5th year students at Maryland! (A macro economist) |

If you are interested in International Trade, especially as it intersects with IO and dynamic heterogeneous agents models, UT looks very promising. |
