Impressions on UT-Austin flyout

darwinian, I hope you don't mind... but had you any financial offer from UT, I'm asking because I've been accepted but without funding so far, and it would be useful to know if some financial awards are going to be available.

Who did you email? Vivian or Eugenio Miravete?

I originally emailed them both, but then wrote a longer email to Eugenio Miravete, explaining my reasons. He is a good egg--for those of you attending UT, he would be a great person to work with.

Except that he told a few students that they were guaranteed funding and then didn't give them funding and didn't explain why (budget cuts) until after he was asked by them.

I know of at least two potentials who were discussing that at the fly-out.

They were promised fellowships or TAs?

If people already promised funding are not getting any, then the rest of us who are waitlisted for funding can kiss that good bye, right?

They were promised funding, the type was not specific.

They were also given the impression that they were at the top of the waiting list for money, so if that's true then you're right. 50% of last year's class didn't have funding, so in my opinion anyone considering UT who doesn't yet have funding should assume that it's unlikely they'll get funding. I know last year some people got offers of funding after April 15th, but for those of us who've already signed on the dotted line somewhere else that's not very useful.

On the other hand, we don't know for certain that people who were promised funding but don't have any are actually at the top of the waiting list, we just know they should be. I don't think it would be impossible for someone else (possibly you) to get funding before them.

I don't quite understand this "promised funding". In which way did they promise? If it was a funded offer, then it must be.

Thanks econorama for the encouragement , I really hope I get some funding from UT.

Is it safe to assume from your post that you will not be going to UT on August, and if so, is it because of funding, better offer or just didn't like something during the flyout?

To all TMers: has anyone originally accepted to UT without funding received word on funding so far?
