econphilomath: So I take it you mean theorists are then all arogant?
No thats not in the least what I meant. If you ever see a group of economists bantering about their work, then such lines often come up. The emperics guys would be like "What does the world achieve by your R^n space?" and the theory guys would be like "You don't understand this stuff, thats why you keep looking for variables and run regressions..!". My comment was meant in the same breath. Being a budding theorist I found it funny.. ![]() |

I had a laugh. I didn't feel anybody (neither Isrealecon nor Nash12) was ill-spirited with those comments.
I am sure I have heard Israelecon's comment someplace else ("so what do people do when they realize they can't do theory? they do labor, run some regressions and thats their dissertation."). I am sure I heard it when I was doing my MA thesis (Econ Policy). Very funny, indeed! ![]()

But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." --Mt 15, 25-28a

this is why i said explicitly that these were not my words, it was a paraphrase of someone else who, btw, is an applied guy not a theorist.
the intention is not that theorists are better, or that applied stuff isn't good economics. the intention is simply to say that theory requires certain technical ability and preparation that not everybody has, while anyone can run a regression, at least a very simple one. but also with regressions, there are obviously very advanced techniques that not everybody can do and that require a lot of skill and technical ability. |

How to compare the placement record of P and Y? I mean, Yale has a ver good detail on this, outcomes and archives. However, P does not have any information on the past information.
By the way, I look through Yale and Princeton's web site and have a feeling of that Yale treats its students better. |

Did you go to fly-outs? It was obvious to me they treat them great at Yale. I think Yale is underrated and more diverse across the board than Princeton. Macro is probably better at Yale although each of your options are not macro powerhouses.
I would wait and see what happens and decide on the 15th. Good luck and I hope to see you at YALE! |

Why Macro is better at Yale? Could you please explain this a little? Thanks! |

have you already decided? are you going to Yale? frankcw: I think econphilomath is right. Yale definitely does treat its students better. This reflects in thier placements as well. Though I'm not so sure about their pedigree in macro. In Development, Labor, IO and Econometrics Yale's placements will probably be comparable to MIT, maybe even better. |

I would decline Harvard for MIT in a heartbeat, in the crazy world where I had such a choice :-). I gather that there is usually a lot of overlap between the accepted pools for each school, and so there will actually be a significant number of declines at both places, even if the rest of us can't imagine doing such a thing...
