Impressions on Duke flyout
If anyone has any comments, I would appreciate it. I'm interested in any aspect of the program you thought was notable.
Since I'm currently accepted with a tuition waiver but without a stipend, I'm particularly interested in any information about the likelihood of getting a stipend in the 2nd year and later or about whether any additional stipends may be sent out as April 15th approaches. |

The Duke fly out was very informative. I was suprised that 34 people came to it. Second year funding is available to everyone who makes it through their first year classes with a B+ or higher or passes the qualifiers.
The department offers GA positions were you grade papers (occasionally) and do research with a professor and TA positions. TA positions pay better. ![]() I hope that helps. ![]() |

Thank you, Chess is life and ward.
I'm bumping this thread up. Does anybody else from the apparently 34 people who went have anything to share? What did you learn on the Duke trip that affected your decision of whether to accept? Or what did you see that you think would be important for other peoples' decisions? |

Their placment is really good. They encourage that students become RA from 2nd year onwards. They have hired several new faculties recently. They probably need RAs. B+ and avobe sounds really good.
