I went. I got the feeling theory people were like "fish in water" there. Micro-metrics guys were all excited when the material to be covered was discused and macro guys....well I'm not sure there was anyone else except me! lol Serioulsy macro is good but it seems pretty specific in nature. (which is not bad but risky)
I got the impression from students this place is very rigurious and gives great training. People were nice but I am worried about not having any fellow macro students. It seems there is only one guy in first year who wants macro as his field. On the other hand, that means lots of attention from profs! Evanston is really nice. Chicago is cool and we had a lot of fun. Its a great place to go, especially for micro theory or metrics. ![]() Also, I ran into a diffrent group of people (only about 4 familiar faces from other flyouts) and no other known regular TMers that I know of on the official day. |

I wouldn't be overly worried about not having enough fellow macro students. There are probably a few internationals doing macro that didn't make it over? Not to mention a fair number in the classes above you. I have a positive impression of their macro based on the one Northwestern PhD prof. I've had. I'm sure you'd be trained well there. Good luck.

I actually talked to first year students and to THE "macro guy" from their class. He confirmed a good training and a lot of attention from the professors. Thats good. I still would like a more macro environment. What I think is not so good is that macro their is sort of narrow idealogically, not broad in scope. Sounds flaky but anyway, that was my impression. If you like that kind of macro it seems a cool place to go though.

econphilomath: How would you characterize the type of macro that NW folks do or their particular ideological leanings compared to other schools with broader offerings? I have some general idea, but would be interested in hearing your take on it.
