At the open house, some one asked a grad student about what social life we should expect to have. After telling everyone to look around the room, he then said, "these people will be your best friends for the next 5 years."
I've been thinking about that a lot. Kind of scary. I hope you guys are cool. |

Even if many Econ PhD students don't have much of a social life, this doesn't necessarily say anything about the opportunity for a good social life during grad school. I mean, let's face it, people getting a PhD in Economics (or Physics, Math, etc) are generally not regarded as the most social people to begin with, and maybe this has something to do with it. Not to mention, for many people who aren't that social it's more convenient to tell others "I don't have much time for a social life" as opposed to "I'm really just not that social of a person." I guess I am just hopeful that I can have a decent social life during grad school. And when I hear people saying there's not much time for it over a 5 year period, I have to wonder how much of this is due to grad school and how much is due to the personality of the individual. Many people work more hours than grad students and still find a good deal of time to have a very active social life. |

It really depends on what year we're discussing. My impression is that you really do not have time for a social life during the first year, although you have to take mental health breaks occasionally- whether that be working out, going out with friends, hobbies etc. But for the most part, you are going to classes, studying, and probably eating a lot with your fellow first-year classmates, so often people do become close friends.
I think after the first year, while you are busy, you can have a social life. I'm sure you could also easily let the program suck up all of your time, there's always more reading and puzzling to be done. But this is the case at any point in your education, I'm sure we can all recall undergrads who did very little socializing. I think after the first year you have a little more control. |
