Before this thread gets derailed onto talking about US politics (which I would not mind), I'd like to mention some random thoughts and calculations I made using the list of accepted students from Columbia (they sent it by email) and those who are going to Yale.
One thing I noticed is the Americans accepted at Yale all (except one) were on the Columbia list. This is not all that surprising in itself since they are probably all great students. But this was not the case in general for internationals where there was hardly any overlap at all. Assuming everybody applied to both (potentially a strong assumption), this would suggest the randomness of the applications process is smaller for "gringos" and larger for internationals. I mention this because we have talked about this in other threads. The modest empirical evidence would support the consensus view about randomness and the information problems adcoms ave when evaluating international applicants. I'll post the aggregates for admitted students at Columbia below. Notice I used cultural division in America (i.e. Latin America which would be Mexico on down) North America 0.41 Asia 0.31 Europe 0.19 Latin America 0.07 Oceania 0.01 Africa 0.01 |
