I didn't want to start a new thread for my question but I hope this doesn't go too much off-topic. At least you are probably more informed than I am about the graduate studies and admissions in UCL.
So, do you know whether UCL has somekind of a "1+3" scheme (like, for eaxample, in Essex) where it is possible to get accepted to the PhD programme but one has to do a MSc during the first year? Or is it so that one has to apply first to the MSc programme and (assuming that he/she gets accepted) then go through the application process again next year in order to get accepted to the PhD programme? Thank you for your help! |

Hi,
in fact the Mphil/PhD is somehow a 1+3 already: 1 year of courses and 3 years of research minimum before ending your phd. I don't think you can apply for a PhD there starting at the master's level. You will need to already have a master, or apply for the MSc. |

My situation is somewhat difficult. I should have two masters (economics + statistics) ready in Finland before I (hopefully) begin my graduate studies abroad. The problem is that I'm not sure whether my two masters are enough for a straight admission to a PhD programme in UK or not. I know that there are at least a couple of Finnish PhD students in UK who have done first a MSc in UK in addition to their master from Finland so this got me wondering. |

I know UCL has ESRC funded places which are 1+3 as a friend of mine is on one. This is the Msc + MPhil/PhD so I imagine they do. It might not be official automatic progression, but typically in the UK if you achieve a distinction in the masters and can find a willing supervisor (often the person who supervises your masters dissertation) then progression is essentially automatic.
This being said, I would be very surprised if your two masters didn't qualify you for direct entry to the MPhil/Phd if your grades are suitably good -get in touch with them anyway though; universities can be funny about foreign qualifications. A BSc from a Finnish university is an entry requirement for MSc programme in UK so this line of reasoning would suggest that a Finnish MSc is an entry requirement for MPhil/PhD programme. But I have a feeling it doesn't neccessarily work this way. |
