    Reading suggestions for better understanding

I'm taking a graduate business econ class. The prof has his own ideas and is presenting an old texbook done over by him with no editior, no co-authors, no checks and balances.

This is all good and well, but I desire more for my own education. I can spit back whatever he wants for assignments and the essay mid-term and final. I happen to agree with him for the most part, but that does not mean it's the only thing I wish to learn.

So, I'm asking those in the know, what would you read for 1) review of basic micro and macro content, 2) macro for management, and 3) global perspective of economics.

What level are you looking for?

    Basic micro: Perloff is good

    Intermediate level: I'd recommend Nicholson

PhD-level: Mas-Colell seems to be the gold std

Level would be "all" at this point. I need to review the basics and fill in the blanks of a graduate 600 level course in essentially Macro for Business managers.

It's been a VERY long time since I took intro level econ, my more recent classes in 300 level econ were not even in this decade. The basics don't change, but I need a vocabulary refresh. To draw the information back from the depths of my brain to the front. Does that make sense?

I'm sure I have a few of my textbooks somewhere, but my husband has no desire to go on an expedition out in the shed. Or the shelves behind the selves. I totally dislike not having access to my books.

For basic macro, I liked my Mankiw book. And I will reiterate my praise of Perloff for micro. Neither book has any math but both contain rich explanations of basic theory.

This is a great intro micro textbook. I don't think it's the most popular, but it definitely does a great job at teaching the basics and intuition for economics (hence, the title). By the way, you should definitely be able to find many older editions and/or used copies for a pretty cheap price.

I went digging in the shelves behind shelves... (before I head out to the bookstore)
I found my notecards from some mid-term or final from some econ class -- I'm trying to determine which. Whatever the case, it is all a super review.

    What I found...
From Principles of Macro back in the early 90s
    Macroeconomics Private and Public Choice
    5th Edition
James D Gwartney, Richard L Stroup

    From Money and Banking
Money the Financial System and the Economy with 1995 supplement (yeah, I see that being helpful now...)
    R Glenn Hubbard

And saddly, the textbook used in the 2nd course of what I'm taking now, uses a book I used in my undergrad for a class called International Financial Management. The dean taught the class then, he would not approve in my opinion of this being used for an econ class. (same university)

    International Financial Management
    Eun and Resnick

One less tx to buy and one less tx to see for the first time. Since there is a break between terms, I can review it then. I don't think I truly "read" it the first time. I never needed to read a text book to get an A in any class.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am lacking my old principles of micro. I also want the intermediate level understanding.

For basic to intermediate macro, I liked Olivier Blanchard's book.

The Macroeconomics text by Robert Barro is good. However, the best introductory/intermediate text is Mankiw's. There's also a good Macro text of Dornbusch/Fisher (it's a bit more analytical than Mankiw).

If you're looking for open economy Macro (Mundell-Fleming...), then refer to Krugman's International Economics.

I bombed the first quiz, I passed, but not to my standards.
    OIY...

Actually, it was more the test format than questions. I have a severe mental hang up with multiple choice. Maybe some GMAT study guides will help with this, if I don't master multiple choice, it won't matter what I know.

I should have gone to a book store the other night... I'm shopping on Amazon right now.
