Anyone knows where to obtain a free download of STATA tutorial?

Matlab has several online courses which you can listen/watch on the subject you are interested in. They are about 90min long. Otherwise just check out the matlab help.

I just heard this from one of my friends who's doing his MA Econ in Canada. SAS is the preferred software in industry whereas Stata rules supreme in academia. Do softwares really have such strong demarcation lines ?
