Applied econometrics is not a field per se, it is mostly labor economists and such who write it among their interests. For some reason Enrico Moretti comes to mind.
Theoretical econometricians develop new methods of squeezing information out of data or out of assumption of sample infiniteness. Like Vitya Chernozhukov. |

theoretical econometrics is just another word (two words) for someone who does statistics (theoretical). i.e. someone that develops statistical methods not necessarily related to economics. in many universities a guy (or gal) like that could just as easily get a job in the statistics dept.

A lot of applied econometrics work is done in the ARE departments. Browse through some of the profiles at Berkeley, Maryland, Cornell (AEM) and you'll know what type of research typifies them.
