When do econ grad schools start?
Hi,
I'm planning the rest of my pre-PhD studies right now and I could use a little help: I'm thinking about applying to some US econ grad schools for 2009. Do you know when these schools are going to start in Fall 2009. I mean, including all preparation math courses, orientation days, etc? Thanks, ElDuffo |

Its really variable. Some places have math camp in July, while others don't require you on campus until nearly September. If you want specifics, you'll have to check the website of the schools you plan to apply to. In general, if you plan on being on campus in the first week or two of August, you'll be fine for most places.

Yeah, I am facing a similar dilemma about finishing up my degree (which will be complete by late August).
European programs tend to have a later starting date (not counting the math camp), whereas Canadian programs start a bit early. However, these are very general statements and you MUST refer to specific institutions (as mentioned before) to gain an accurate understanding. However, I for one would probably not take the option of working under a very tight deadline. |

Wisconsin is one of the latest start dates around, with orientation beginning around August 27 and no math camp.
August 1-15 seems to be much more common at other schools.

Chicago's math camp starts on September 9th, which is a bit later than I would have liked.

Columbia's has typically been August 1, +/- a few days. You can usually predict fairly well based on the school's academic calender, i.e. if they start classes right after Labor Day, start time will likely be early August; if well after Labor Day, probably mid-to-late August.
