Attrition is basically a measure of imperfect information: the school admitted some students who couldn't cope, and some students enrolled not knowing whether they really wanted an econ PhD. An extremely rigorous program that had perfect information and found students with perfect information would still have very low (or zero) attrition.

Also, I don't have exact numbers, but MIT's program is actually known for it's high completion rates. The program's website says that 65 percent of entering students complete in 5 years or less! That's relatively high, not low.

Isn't Minnesota one of the more math-heavy programs ? I am not sure where I read it but I think that their attrition rate is not above average.

asquare, you are probably right... i have also heard that MIT takes in certain students that Harvard or even Chicago doesnt.. so, i guess they are a little more liberal? and asianeconomist, it was news to me that minnesota is the most math-intensive program (i will definitely keep that in mind while applying)!

Sorry for confusing you. I just had an inkling that UMN is a, certainly not THE, math-heavy program. Good luck with your apps though.
