Hi everybody. Thanks for you guys’ input…
KGkhan23… Yeah, I might look into some Canadian programs… The thing is that my girl friend cannot come over to Canada because she’s a US citizen… Thanks, asianeconomist… I actually don’t care too much about the ranking but I care if dept has connection with World Bank, Asian Development Bank or etc… But I know that top departments actively work with them in anyways… Oikos-nomos, thanks… Yeah,,, I don’t know much about specialty of depts… But I look through rankings and depts’ websites… Anyway, I am not a competitive applicant… I should be happy with any offer from fairly high ranked depts… Anyways, Colorado-Boulder might be nice… It is close to a big city and seems a beautifully city… Japanese universities are not my choice, kartelite. They love their own undergrad students and don’t take outsiders. Plus, I need to take entrance exams conducted in Japanese. I took all my econ + math classes here in the US, so I guess that I even don’t understand their exams… They don’t fund students as well… You pay out of your pocket… And plus there is no job for my girlfriend… I think that the world is globe, so there is no start point nor ending point… Just my opinion… jeeves0923, you are right… Anyway Japan is not a comfortable place for me… I lived there for 20 years and I never felt comfortable. Attending a graduate school there for 5+ years suffocates me... As far as English is concerned, I believe that my English is good enough to survive American academia (indeed, I am surviving in an American econ undergrad program with 3.9+ GPA)… But GRE verbal is too difficult for me… Sigh… |

To the OP:
Since you are so much into development, do consider a few ARE programs. For example, Maryland's ARE has quite good contacts with the IGOs due to their proximity to DC. Also, IMHO, they might be a bit easier to get into. |

I know what you are going through. The verbal portion of GRE can be very brutal for international students. I am an international student too. So I understand what you are going through. I know this Japanese girl whose english was not that good but she ended up getting 1450 in GRE. Her AWA was not so great- I think she got 3.5. The bottom line is GRE is all about practicing. If you work hard- you will get a decent score.
If you are interested about development economics I suggest that you look into the New School (www.newschool.edu). This university was started by a bunch of radical European economists and its very good for development economics.Good luck |

Thanks Maple Leaf. Yeah, the verbal is killin me... So the girl got 1450... that's better than native speaker's average lol I am more comfortable with AWA (I like writing)... On the other hand, my neighbor, a Chinese girl, got 300 on V... I should be somewhere between the Japanese girl and my neighbor but... I am so nurvous!!
