Avg. Starting Salary for a Ph.D grad from a 25 - 50 ranked school?

I was thinking that the avg. starting salary for a ph.d. grad from a 25-50 ranked school was around 65k. Am I way to low on my estimate?

unitroot 's dreams are becoming reality.
The avg salary varies wildly by field, geography, and personal preferences, so it's kind of a pointless statistic. I would personally think that 60K would be pretty much the bottom of the pay scale for academic economists. PhD granting institutions offer starting salaries between 85 and 100K to assistant professors. Lecturers and people who teach at primarily teaching oriented institutions such as LACs or state universities earn less, but I doubt that many lecturers with a degree from a top 50 program earn less than 60k. The pay outside of the academia is less predictable, and as mentioned, depends on the field, skill, experience, geography, preferences, etc.

You need to specify whether you're referring to academic economists, private sector economists, government economists (and then state, federal, etc), international organization economists, think tank economists, etc.

In case this has never been posted, Arkansas does a pretty good job analyzing the labor market for new econ phds each year.

Center for Business and Economic Research

Look under Labor Market Survey for new phds in economics.

From my info, I gathered that starting salary for a position at a bachelors/masters school is around 65k.....starting salary at a phd granting econ dept is around 85k (with top schools making offers above 100k)

Nymaj 's dreams are becoming reality.
65k is a low, if you are decent you should expect at least 80-85 plus 10k for each of the first 2 summers from any research institution. Of course if your good you should get more. And if your great the sky is the limit. And if you suck maybe 65 is about right. But you don't have to be at a top 50 school to an offer around 80k.
