a PhD caditate applying for PhD once a gain!!!! asking for your points

Hi everybody,
My case sounds somehow wired! I am PhD candidate in economics in one of the unknown Asian universities and I am going to defend my thesis till coming fall. To be perfectly honest, I am keenly interested in economic theory and I love to contribute in intellectual dealing of this science. Because I am not satisfied with the quality and the standard of education in our department, I tried so hard to increase my knowledge in economics by myself, but after so much effort I came to the conclusion that I have to start economics once again in one of the eminent US economics departments.

For the sake of that I took GRE and Toefl last year and got a (Q-790, V-330, AW-3) GRE and a 96 iBT. I know they are not good!! (It is mostly because I could not devote enough time to the exams for the work that I had to do in my PhD) I have also audited some formal math courses such as analysis, linear algebra, stochastic processes, and some real analysis.

I have some questions and I am asking for the help of all you dear friends:
1. Having a PhD would HELP or HARM me in my admission?
2. Which of the GRE or TOEFL test, do you think is more necessary for me to improve?
3. Because I don’t have the score of the Math courses in my transcripts, do you think auditing the classes would be a strength point in my package? What about a recommendation letter from one of the math professors who taught the courses?
I am not satisfied with what I have done in more that 4 years but I am full of energy to back to the correct way in the future. I am sure your valuable comment would shed light on my way.

I don't think Universities accept people in the PhD program who already has a PhD degree, unless the disciplines are very different from each other. Can be wrong though.

I think Lokayot is right. Most schools do not accepts people who already have a PhD in the same discipline. To your second question, I think you need to improve both the GRE and the TOEFL to have a chance at a decent US university (GRE V should be at least 450 and AWA at least 3.5). Otherwise they are going to think that you do not have the English knowledge to be successful in any program.

You have to retake your GRE. Your Verbal and AWA scores are too low for any decent econ. grad school.
On the other hand, I think Lokayot and tennisboy85 are right. If you do your phd again, you have to do it in a different discipline.

In which discipline are you doing your phd?

Thank you everybody,
I am now studing economics. It sounds so disappointing to me that I have to change my discipline. you now, I love econ, it sounds terrible.

Do you think it’s a restrict rule!

If I can postpone my graduation, can I apply as a PhD student?

I would suggest you to write to graduate secretary of the econ departments, explaining your case. This would seal the deal for you.

I know viveco is far more adept at this, but why not try a few professors too.

See this is something related to policy of the department, for which the prof need not be pestered. For evaluation purpose, you may write to the profs.. I know this is weird according to most people in this forum, but I dont see any harm in this. It is up to you.

Some encouraging massages!
I know it’s weird to many people, but it is not always the case that you would be in the right place, this may happen to many people but a few may try to go back to the right.

Viveco is right! they are the people who have the last word, I will get in touch with some of the departments and post the result.

It is valuable for me to be in this forum with all you, and I am waiting for more comments
