Stanford online Real Analysis course --- comments?
Hi all,
Has anybody taken any of the Stanford online math courses before? Specifically, real analysis? (EPGY University Mathematics M115) What are you thoughts? Is this a good substitute for an in-class course? Thx! |

I took it.
they give you a CD . you just watch it and take final . they give you final through email. you gotta submmit in 24 ours through fax or scanned email. i can't tell you whether it is a good substitute for in class course since i have no idea on in class course. but My advisor recommend me to do it since school actually counts as a in class course. hope this helps. |

If possible, would you please comment on the following: (1) It was not clear from your previous post --- did you take the "Real Analysis" course from them or did you take another math course? (2) How long did it take you to study the entire course? (3) Was the instructor / professor helpful to you over the phone or online? (4) From the website, I think I'd read that there are periodic homework assignments to be submitted. How do you find their grading? Specifically, do they offer a lot of comments on what was wrong and how to improve? Thanks! |

A somewhat related question: Does MIT's OCW have any good online material for real analysis? I remember someone on the forum having mentioned taking linear algebra material from the OCW site so I was wondering if anybody has seen stuff for real analysis as well.

I took real analysis course. 3 years past since i have taken it. they might use elementary analysis book. i did not take another math courses.
you are the one who manage the schedule.if you hand it HW fast, you an make it fast. during the course ,i haven't had a contact with professor. so i don't know whether it would be helpful or not..sorry.. about HW. they assign some of questions from text book. some written by prof. they aren't that bad.. you might wanna try it. since on transcript, it doesnt say EPGY. it says just continuing education. also. the level of class is elementary analysis., but on transcript, it says Real analysis... peace Quote:

Thank you so much for the reply! I really appreciate it!
I'll definitely give a very serious look into doing this course over this summer. Thanks again for your input! ![]() Quote:

There are some really good real analysis texts that are suitable for self-study (Rudin, Pugh, Lang, etc). I don't think you will find anything equivalent online. OCW might have perhaps some homeworks as well as solutions, maybe even recorded lectures, but I think a good book should be your number one reference.
