Programming languages in economics
I am finishing a macroeconomics course that I really liked. In the process we learned Matlab in order to solve some of the models we studied. I was really interested in this and i would like to learn a programming language and I start wondering, Is Matlab the only software used nowadays in macroeconomics?
Which languague would be useful to learn if I'm interested in macroeconomics? Thanks in advance |

matlab is probably the most common. I'm a little biased towards Mathematica. It is a little bit more sophisticated and high-power than matlab, and it does some things that matlab simply doesn't do.
I know there are still people who use a lot of fortran and gauss, but it's fading. |

Fortran, which is very close to C++ is common among those that do OLG models. The jump from matlab to fortran wouldn't be too tough, I went the harder route and learned fortran first. Unless you are doing some heavy computing, I would imagine that matlab could be your bread and butter.
