computer programming

I'm planning to apply to a US university for fall 2009 but I have no programming knowledge. Is it necessary i self learn the basic C and C ++ before venturing to apply?

IMHO, mastering a mathematical software "MATLAB" or statistical software "SAS/STATA/R" will serve you a lot better.

It will be helpful in grad school, but not necessary for admission.

I dont think you need to know programming like software engineers.
if you can manage softwares like matlab,stata etc that will be enough analize economic models.

Knowing C++ is a big asset for doctors who want to work in the financial industry as quantitative analysts. However it will take you many years to master it!
