Would Bonn be a good alternative for someone interested in labour economics and microeconometrics? At least it is the home of IZA, but would one be able to benefit from that?

Hiya!

Since the topic developed into a ranking of German institutions in Econ, what is your opinion about Bielefeld? I mean in Economics in general and in the field of Mathematical Economics (what I´m interested in) in particular.

Thx!

As far as I know Bielefeld has two or three good scientists, but their overall reputation is not as high as the reputation of other universities like those y-gat mentioned.

But surely it is a good university.

However, if you want to see a university ranking for the German speaking world, I think this one is ok: Handelsblatt Ökonomen-Ranking 2007: Die 25 Top-Fakultäten für VWL (Gemessen an ihrer Forschungsleistung seit 1997)

But I would say that Köln is overrated, Kiel and especially Konstanz are strongly underrated (but I might be biased here since I am Kiel at the moment).

Best wishes

For those who want to do research on financial statistics Bonn could be a very good choice.

For those who are wondering what financial statistics is here are some references:

@miaatro: Yes, thats right. Bonn is strongly connected to the IZA. So if you want to to Labour, you will definitely benefit from the IZA.

@bargalhao: I second Diplomer's opinion. Bielefeld seems to be strong in Mathematical Economics. And I think they have a good master program in quantitative economics (together with three different European universities).

@Diplomer: That is also my opinion. Cologne has two or three very good micro-profs, but overall they seem overrated. COnstance is a small, but very fine department. They are definitely underrated.

@mpleportals: Financial statistics in Bonn is represented by Prof. Sandmann, isnt it? So yes, you are right, but I heard that Prof Sandmann will be on leave for at least one year. Or do you mean people from the mathematics department?

I meant everybody who does research on financial statistics (both applied and theoretical), thus I included people from the mathematics department.

As I studied in Bonn I might add some Information (and of course I am a little bit biased)

First of all, Bonns obvious strengths are microeconomics and behavioral economics. Bonn has close ties to the IZA , as you can write your dissertation at the IZA and people from the IZA give lectures at the Uni. Because of this I would also see Labour economics as a strength of bonn.

@y-gat
Sandmann's research area is more in Option Pricing and Interest Rate-models, than Financial Statistics, but I wouldn't see him as an active Researcher anymore, as hist last publication is a couple of years ago. And I doubt he will be on leave in the short future, as he was on leave 2 years ago.
For Econometrics they don't have only Breitung, they also have Kneip, who does Mathematical Statistics. And they also hired a new junior-faculty in econometrics.

@mpleportals
Unfortunately in the math-departement nobody is doing statistics, they are more doing stochastic analysis.

Thanks for the info, y-gat and Unidentified. I guess I should really start considering adding Bonn to my list.
