Excuse my ignorance, but with a publication in such a top field journal, would it be a good idea to shoot higher ? I mean, shouldn't this be a substantial strong point in the profile.

What exactly is wrong with a PhD at Florida or Clemson? Isn't money and publishing the only thing that differentiates schools? Well people could argue too that schools with money draw smarter kids, but what the heck lol!!

Aim higher.. maybe I should, but I really dont think that way. I am of the following thinking. I am probably going to have two publications out of my PhD if I went to an average school. But if I went to a top school, were nothing is guaranteed I may never get a good professor to work with and publish nothing.

I don't want to teach with my PhD, but just want to get back to the corporate world where I am at, once i have it. I want a PhD coz I just want to have one, even if I dont do much with it. I want to say to myself I have ONE.

Seriously I think I could do well if I went to Cornell, Minesota, Purdue etc.. but.. I am not patient for all the abstract math they emphasize. So I'll take a Florida program were within 3 yrs I am expected to be done.

BUT again i could change my mind once I motivate myself straight.. hahah let's see how I do in the GRE's lol.

Sorry for the delay in response.....I have been away from my computer.

I dont find the cost of living to be too bad (no substantial difference b/t Tallahassee, Tampa (in the University area), or Gainesville).....if you want to live by yourself you probably will be spending 1000-1500 per month (depending on your lifestyle preferences). By splitting apartments, you can save substantially and there certainly is plenty of opportunity to do so....

During the summer I split an apartment....I wouldnt have split a place if it was for the whole academic year....but thats just a personal preference as I like having an area of solitude.

Living in Gainesville can be pretty frugal or lavish depending on what you want to spend. (I have seen rents in decent plasces as low as 420 a month) The city has a lot of new apartment and condo buildings but so much that the supple far out weighs the demand. If you are looking into applied econ through the Ag Program then UF is a really great place (I minored in it) The professors hail from alot of top notch ag econ programs. If you want the traditional econ route UF Phd accepts very few students, but all of them are full funded. The department is smaller but very under rated. Most professors went to top programs. Individual Professors like to put alot of time helping the top of their class succed. A few years ago they had placements to Duke and Berkley

Just found out Figlio is leaving UF for Northwestern (in the job movers thread). That's a big, big loss for their department.

One of the reasons why I am considering UF for the Applied Econ program is because I noticed a lot of the faculty were from "top" school and yet the program was underrated. I love an underdog school, because I feel the faculty student interraction is usually way better. So I am going for that, I just need a decent GRE to get in. Florida is a top 15 Applied Econ program.

Out of curiosity, what's the link to the Applied Econ program? All I can find is a link to a "Regular" Economics PhD at UF.

Ph.D. - Department of Economics - Warrington College of Business Administration
