In Europe for some time
Hi Gang: I hope that all are well. We ended up doing very well this year recruiting great students to Chicago so I am quite pleased.
My first recruiting class just took the qualifers so my fingers are crossed for good results. As usual, along the way of this next recruiting cycle please email me queries and I will certainly try to respond. On a different note. Sorry for the late posting--I will be in Europe giving some lectures in experimental economics for the next 3 weeks. If you are in the area please stop by. The fun begins this Wednesday in Tilburg--please see here: Tilburg University - An Introduction to Experimental Economics I will then go to Helsinki and on to Stockholm. I look forward to meeting anyone interested. Best, John |

Sadly, my arrival and your departure at Tilburg coincides perfectly. I hope for better luck next year.

Dear Prof. List,
Now that the whole selection process of 2008 is far behind us, I am looking in hindsight, and I really want to thank you for the time you took to share information about the process in general and the one in UC in particular. Thanks, and see you five years from now in the job market forum ![]()

Dear eqtisadi: Thanks much for your kind words. Always nice to know that I can at least help one person. And, good luck at Stanford. You made a great choice. Great people, great climate, and top notch program overall.
Promise me one thing--when times get hard, and they will, step back and recall why you are doing a phd in economics. Then, work your butt off to get the job done. Hard work has no pure substitute. Please do not hesitate to contact me for help in the future. See you in 5 years otherwise! Everyone else, I have received alot of private messages so please bear with me. I appreciate your patience. Best, John |

Dear Prof. List,
Can you please provide us some guidance on a topic we frequently come across in this forum.I mean, how could someone offset bad masters results(marginal pass) due to serious health problems where the same candidate has excellent profile as an undergraduate(excellent CV, u/g cum laude all A+,possible a co-authored working paper by the application time, many conferences etc great letters from u/g profs).I discussed this topic with a Harvard college of yours and he said that top 5 schools do not care about this and immediately reject the candidate as the concurrence happens to be high. He recommended those applicants should look for one of another school outside the top 5 where they are going to take into consideration these facts. Sincerely, Italos
