I will agree with vivek31, but only if the metric is placing students in U.S. academic jobs. For a variety of reasons, it is very hard to go from Europe to the U.S. In terms of faculty quality, however, it is hard to argue that USC or Florida (who I see are ranked 40 and 41) compare to UPF, Cambridge, etc..

I don't see the basis for this statement. 100% of my professors argue instead that the quality of faculty at USC is clearly better than at both Cambridge and UPF (with Cambridge ranked certainly worse than UPF). The rankings above are in terms of publications if I am not wrong, ad I don't think there is any other metric for quality of faculty than publications. Again, rankings can be flawed but they are the only objective way to see things, the rest is personal opinions I guess. Then if you ask why European universities are in a worse shape than US ones, this is an interesting question I think.

Really, you have discussed the relative merits of Cambridge and UPF with 100% of your professors?
Forget any rankings that you are looking at, the NRC doesn't even look at European schools and you can keep econphd.net. Go to the faculty pages and compare publications over the last 5 years. USC is a fine program and I don't want to come across as saying otherwise. But its faculty is not as good as Cambridge (even with their recent big, big loss), and UPF has added so much firepower recently. |

Keep in mind that there's a really big lifestyle and weather difference between Rice and MSU. If you're averse to cold weather (or to incredibly hot summers), you should consider that as a minor factor. In general, I agree with everyone else that MSU is the better school.
