Political Science Admission Guide
Can anybody post a poli sci admission guide like the one they have for econ (econphd.net)? If each of us can provide some tips, we may also be able to construct a complete guide.

That's a great idea. But what would we put on there? To my knowledge there aren't nearly as many information sources available for PoliSci as for Econ (like field rankings or so).
What I find interesting (in a frightening way though, because they are clearly counterproductive) are the rumor blogs about the political science job market. There you can at least get some sort of idea what departments are currently hiring in what fields. http://wikihost.org/wikis/polsci0607/wiki/start http://americanandcomparativejobs.blogspot.com/ http://irrumormill.blogspot.com/2006...formation.html |

Michaelmas, you could start a thread on this. I am currently studying in such a program and will perhaps even be able to give you some advice about admissions.
Generally, the admissions process for M.A. IR/IA or MPA is much different from PhD admissions (and requires totally different application profiles... work experience and that stuff counts, not academic potential or accomplishments). |

I am really glad of the birth of this new forum! Since it seems that the top students of Caltech Social Science PhD land into PoliSci departments (see John Eguia at NYU and Betsy Sinclair at Chicago this year) I was wondering if there's a salary gap between assistant professor position in PoliSci depts and the same position in Econ depts. Any clue?

I don't have the exact figures with me, but I believe the average gap is somewhere between 10K and 20K in favor of econ. The faculty salary ranking is roughly as follows: Business > Law > Medical > Econ > Engineering > Sciences > Other Social Sciences > Humanities and Arts. Of course I'm only taking about average salaries, and the stars in every group tend to do exceptionally well.
