My SAT essay ( Is it better to be Underrated than to be Overrated by other people)

Each and every person has to conform to certain expectations expressed from the people around him. When these people overestimate you, you are in danger of letting them down. It is better to be underestimated by people so that you always have something to surprise them with.

When underrated, there is an advantage of surprise and a low expectation which should be used carefully to deduct fruitful results. An example is at the student exchange program: A Chinese student came from Beijing to Pittsburgh, PA via a student exchange program. My friend and I were assigned with the student to tour the city and explore new cultures for 1 week. We came upon a competition in a small quiz at school and due to bias reasons; we underestimated him and miserably lost the quiz.

Being underrated also has many advantages other than the sheer advantage of surprise. Being overrated in tense moments is a disadvantage since everyone expects a positive result from you- a terrible disadvantage. Neil Donaldson was our high school football champ for TJ high school. He took us all the way to state championship; during the final 5 minutes- he got tensed- since he knew his courier was over if he did not score or if his team did not win. Everyone was expecting a comeback from our team like in all the other games- but it did not happen. We lost the game and Neil Donaldson did not get scholarship. (Today he is a high school dropout.) One high expectation ruined his courier.

Thus, reinforcing my original point- it is better to be underrated than to be overrated in the eyes of the public.
