You would expect this sentence: "A microscope can reveal vastly more detail than what is visible to the naked eye." In this case, "what" can be omitted as many other cases of usage. I can't explain why since the grammar is so. This is not a matter of science.A microscope can reveal vastly more detail than is visible to the naked eye. Why there is no subject ahead of "is" ? Could you show a complete use of the word "than" for me?
Secondly, if you want a complete explanation of the word "than", you'd know that it'd take pages of paper. So you'd better look it up on a book and when you have a specific question, we will consider. If you don't have a adequate book, then tell me, I will point some online sources for you.
Good luck,
