Hey guys!! Take a look at this one!!! The answer and explanation follow the question.

3. ______ 16.8 million acres, the Tongass National Forest in Alaska is the largest national park in the United States.

O It has
O With
O Because of
O Although has

Answer and Explanation:

A: Many people choose this answer because it looks correct to have a sentence here.

However, we must remember that whenever we have two sentences together, we must have a conjunction to join them. Since we do not have a conjunction to join two sentences, we cannot have two sentences.

Still following me? Good.

B: This is the best answer; we can use a preposition here with the noun phrase '16.8 million acres'. By the way, you should notice that this pattern on the TOEFL is very common; if we see a noun with no function in the sentence, we can often use a preposition before it.

C: Yes, this is also a preposition, but it is the wrong one. 'Because of 16.8 million acres' simply has no meaning.

D: This one is wrong for two reasons: First, it is grammatically wrong, since we need a subject after 'Although'. Second, the meaning is wrong--16.8 million acres is quite large, so it makes sense that this park is the largest in the US.

Got it? Good!
