haohmaku
1. Ozone has its origin in a number of sources, a prime one being the automobile engine. # Would you expending this sentence to its normal form? 2.The USS Bonhomme Richard was commanded by Jonh Paul Jones, that won a notable sea battle during the Revolution. that -> ? .I think we can omit "that" but we must need a conjunction indeed ? It makes me confuse and I need your helps.
ouranous
we should use who instead of that because john paul jones is a person (his name sounds like the bassist in led zeppelin:))
haohmaku
In some way ,we use "that" in this case is not correct. But as I remember, ETS doesn't test it.
hainp
Hi Haohmaku, I found in the book of A.J. Thomson (page 81-90) that: 1. that is NEVER used in non-defining relative clauses as relative pronoun. 2. that is used in defining relative clause as a subject after all, everyone, everybody, noone, nobody and those. e.g. everybody who/that knew him liked him. Your sentence contain a non-defining clause so that cannot stand there. Right!

haohmaku
Hey ! finally, I found it. I read this line Cliffs TOEFL Preparation guide, page 177 :"TOEFL does not test the use of which and that in restrictive clauses". So this is what makes me confuse.
