Hello!
I have got a problem. I've practiced to find errors in sentences. But I haven't got right answers. Could somebody check my answers? Thanks. 1. In process of photosynthesis, all green plants absorb carbon dioxide gas in the manufactory of food. The correction is " In the process" 2. Thomas Edison made improvements in the Crookes tube and became known for the inventor of the fluoroscope. The correction is " known as" 3. The first vaccine ever developed used to combat smallpox, a disease resulting from infection by a virus. The correction is " was used" 4. In the 1840s, Joseph Henry, the most original American scientist since Benjamin Franklin, made important discovery in electromagnetism. The correction is " discoveries" 5. The principle of radiocarbon dating is the most important science technique to be applied to archeological work in recent times. The correction is " scientific" 6. Charles A. Lindbergh made the first one-man, non-stopped flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. The correction is " non-stop" 7. Ants find their way by following scent laid down by their previous ants. The correction is we don't need " their" before " previous. |

Hi Igor,
In question 1, the noun 'process' is followed by a qualifying phrase- 'photosynthesis'. SO we should include 'the' b4 'process' as a rule. 3) Since vaccine should be used by some one it should be in passive form .'was used is correct. 4)Since there are no Determiners before "important dicovery" it should be in plural form. Erin!
Thank you very much for your reply. I've got all these questions from the " NTC's practice test kit for the TOEFL" published in 1996. I've borrowed this book from local library. Do you recommend using this book? Igor. |

I used this book a long, long time ago, but didn't like it very much, especially the listening part. If I remember correctly, the people on the listening section of the book spoke with various accents, such as Southern, New York, etc., perhaps because the writers wanted to make the book more realistic.
