Whereas I like pizza, I cannot eat it.
I like pizza, thus I eat it often. I like pizza; however, I rarely eat it. Whereas my sister has cat, I do not because I am allergic. My sister has a cat, thus she must buy cat food. My sister has a cat; however, I do not because I am allergic. Some synonyms: Whereas: Although, though, even though Thus: Therefore However: But Tino

In one sense I think they are almost interchangeable. Whereas is perhaps (in UK at least) less commonly used. Note the following though. 'My wife prefers classical music whereas my daughter prefers pop.' That makes a straight comparison. 'Although my wife prefers pop music my daughter prefers classsical.' That makes a comparison but also implies a comment, in this case about a possibly surprising difference in choice given age. However I do not think we would use whereas as an alternative in 'Although it was a cold day I felt hot'. In that case an anomaly is pointed out but there is no comparison. Michael
