"when"=conj
"a bird"=subject
"molt"=vi
brank needs subject, because ______ loses its feathers is an appositiv.

you need subject,
so that means the relation between cause and effect,
but you can see that molt is the same as lose its feather.
importantly, so that is a conj, as if is also conj,
"so its'' is also wrong, because its means bird's feathers can lose its feathers.
as when it is the right answer,
"as when" is the conj., "it" is the subject. The brank needs a subject.so "as when it" is the only right answer.

If you use "so that" the sentence won't have Subject. It's my opinion ^^.

OK, I understand. I have this kind of problems in which the subject is missing, but now I have seen enough examples. I hope, it will be ok in the future.
