Some more questions

Pls explain for me these questions:
1. ------- economic change by investigating the fluctuations in the relationship between worker’s wages and their buying power.

(A) Economists gauging

(B) Economists gauge how

(C) Economists gauge

(D) Whenever economists gauge

Answer key is C, how about B, why can't we choose B?

2.A patrilineal extended family consists of core group of males, their wives and their unmarried daughters.

The right answer is B, but I don't know how to correct it.

3. Today’s nuclear fission fuels are the remnants of which used to be a much more active mixture of radioactive and fissionable materials two billion years ago and earlier.

The right answer is A, may be of which -> of what, but I am not sure

4. Petrography concerns primarily with the detailed description and classification of rocks, whereas perology deals primarily with rock formation

The right answer is A, but I don't know how to correct it.

No you cannot choose B, cuz "change" is a noun in this sentence. If choosing B, it should be "Economists gauge how economic changes by ..."

2.A patrilineal extended family consists of core group of males, their wives and their unmarried daughters.

A patrilineal extended family consists of a/the core group of males, their wives and their unmarried daughters.

3. Today’s nuclear fission fuels are the remnants of which used to be a much more active mixture of radioactive and fissionable materials two billion years ago and earlier.

of which -> which

4. Petrography concerns primarily with the detailed description and classification of rocks, whereas petrology deals primarily with rock formation

concerns -> deals
parallelism

3. of which -> of what : an adj clause vs a noun clause .(checking it in TOEFL GRAMMAR).

4. Lyf, Your key answer is wrong, I don't know where you got the answer but most documents on internet are not offcial. The correct answer must be D(-> formations)

Parallel structure doesn't require that you use the same verb.

Haohmaku, The forth question I post is the sentence number 40-TOEFL 1999/08. Actually, the answer key is A.I agree with you that Parallel structure doesn't require the same verb.But in this case, how to correct?

In my opinion, to correct the problem, I will use "is concerned" in place of "concerns" because "concern" is a transitive verb not a intransitive verb.

haohmaku,

I think not. Here rock formation = formation of rocks and so is OK.
